I think we need more than just a change within the discipline: what needs to change is the architect’s role in society along with architecture’s role in the economic and political development of our cities. Italian architecture could once again represent that change. Contrary to the widespread belief, it will not come about through a new utopian way of thinking but through a careful reflection on our past and above all on our present: a look at reality transformed into an occasion for an encounter. That is why Italian architecture can only be a wrong story, a complicated, unresolved story that is nonetheless capable of raising new questions and offering new prospects – that can be built slowly in time through encounter.
